Nippy Saturday.

This Saturday is one of two Saturdays I work at our church soup kitchen.  We really don't serve soup but it still has that name since once we did serve soup.  Today was a yummy casserole with beef, rice, yummy peppers and a few vegetables. We addded vegetables and cookies and a piece of bread along with a cup of grapes.   I should say the casserole smelled yummy since all the food went to the folks that stop by for a lunch.  I left a few things at Goodwill that had been dropped off at the church.

The neighbor family came over for a visit showing some real interest in the fish that had been in the pond all summer.  It was time to empty the pond and they took the fish home with them to add to their little outdoor pond.  The problem is these fish have been delighted with the dirty water full of things to eat that had accumulated over the summer months.  They have died every year when added to clean water.  It's still to be determined if the neighbors have that little extra touch.  The pond also gave up a little snapping turtle.  Don't know how that managed to find it's way to the pond but it did. Last years clean out included a dead mouse.  So...todays gifts were better.   So it was an interesting afternoon again seeing the world through the eyes of the children.  They certainly are happy and I'm happy to have one more thing done before the snow flies.

Speaking of snow.  Juncos were in the yard this afternoon.  I call them snow birds.  They are ground feeders so they were scratching and looking.  I threw a few seeds down for them with the hope they will find them.  The feeder full of sunflower seeds is emptying fairly often.  And of course Mr. and Mrs. Downey are busy  at the suet feeder.

The zennia seeds continue to dry and soon will be ready to be packed away ready for the spring planting.  My hope is that soon the bulbs that are ordered will be arriving for planting.

The seed parts look like little arrowheads and are dark in color.

So yard clean up continues.  The flowers that are blooming are beautiful in color and I am so reluctant to pull them out by the foots.  What a whimp!!!  One bed has nothing left but snapdragons.  Another beautiful little flower.  Frost is not predicted in the near future so I'm just enjoying what soon will be gone.

  1. Your garden sounds so amazing! We were suppose to have frost this morning. I picked all the peppers and Brussel sprouts from the garden the other day. Just a few carrots left.
